Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro by Energy Australia Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro Project Update EnergyAustralia, the owner of the Mount Piper power station, is in the early stages of exploring the development of a new pumped hydro energy storage project at Lake Lyell, near Lithgow. Energy storage projects such as the Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro Project are an important part of New South Wales' clean energy transformation. Their purpose is to provide reliable energy at times of high energy demand such as cold winter days, or when there is little sun or wind to power renewable energy generation. Planning and Feasibility Assessment As part of the careful planning required for a large project, EnergyAustralia is undertaking geotechnical exploration on land it owns near Lake Lyell and at Mount Walker. This will provide information on ground conditions and the geology of the project site to help us assess the technical and environmental feasibility of the project. Further Geotechnical Investigations EnergyAustralia is currently seeking approval from the Lithgow Council for an extension of geological exploration work at the site to gather further geotechnical information and to establish a comprehensive groundwater monitoring program. Over the past six months, the Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro Project team has drilled exploratory geological boreholes to better understand if ground conditions will suit development. The proposed new drilling works, involving additional boreholes, will be substantially the same as works originally approved by Council (DA070/22) and completed earlier this year. It is anticipated the works will result in minimal environmental impact. If approved by Council, new geological works will commence later this year and take 3 to 5 months to complete. More Information and Community Consultation Detailed feasibility investigations for the Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro Project will extend throughout 2023 and 2024 before a decision will be made on whether the project will proceed. This will include a period of extensive community consultation on the proposed project. lakelyellpumpedhydro.com.au facebook.com/LakeLyell Pumped HydroProject Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro by Energy Australia Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro Project Update EnergyAustralia , the owner of the Mount Piper power station , is in the early stages of exploring the development of a new pumped hydro energy storage project at Lake Lyell , near Lithgow .
