Public Notice Mt Piper Power Station DA 80-10060 Modification 9 C EnergyAustralia LIGHT THE WAY Notification of the modification application in accordance with section 98 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2021 (EP&A Regulation). Mount Piper Power Station (MPPS) is located at Blackmans Flat, NSW 2790 and is owned and operated by EnergyAustralia NSW Pty Ltd. At MPPS, ash is created as a byproduct of the coal combustion used on site for electricity generation purposes. The ash includes both bottom furnace ash (wet) and fly ash (dry). The majority of the ash generated by MPPS is emplaced in specially designed placement repositories and one of these is the Mt Piper Ash Repository (MPAR) approved under DA 80-10060. Prior to fly ash being placed in the approved ash repository areas, it needs to be conditioned to raise its moisture content. This conditioning is done using water or brine. The brine is a by-product of cooling water treatment at MPPS and the desalination process at the nearby Springvale Water Treatment Project. EnergyAustralia would like to notify interested parties that it is seeking to modify DA 80/10060 to authorise proposed enhancements to ash management practices at the MPAR, including revisions to the approved capping strategy. > > This proposed modification relates to the MPAR only and consist of: > Installation of a Leachate Barrier Management System at the MPAR; Installation of a synthetic liner cap to replace the currently approved 1 m of water-conditioned ash on the upper surface of the MPAR; and Construction of a drainage structure and energy dissipator to direct clean water flows from the MPAR. No other changes are proposed to any aspect of the current approved operations at MPPS as part of the Modification. In particular, the Modification will not result in any changes to the amount of electricity produced at MPPS or to the amounts of coal combusted or ash generated in the generation process at MPPS. The Project is subject to the environmental assessment and public consultation requirements of Part 5 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. The application and the documents accompanying the application will be available for inspection at the office of the NSW Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure during ordinary office hours, or alternatively at the Department's website https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects.
